Navigating the VA Claims Process for Camp Lejeune-Related Diseases

To qualify for presumptive service connection due to exposure to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, you must meet the following requirements:

1. Service at Camp Lejeune: You must have served at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days (consecutive or non-consecutive) between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987.

2. Disease Associated with Contaminated Water: You must have been diagnosed with a disease linked to exposure to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, as listed under 38 C.F.R. § 3.309(f).

These diseases include:

– Kidney cancer – Liver cancer – Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – Adult leukemia – Multiple myeloma – Parkinson’s disease – Aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes – Bladder cancer

3. Disease Manifestation: Your diagnosed disease must have manifested to a degree of 10 percent or more at any time after service (38 C.F.R. §§ 3.307(a)(7), 3.309(f)).

If your diagnosed disease is not on the list above, you’ll need to establish a direct link (nexus) between your disease and service. This can be done by submitting a medical opinion from a doctor.
